Just like my homelab, nothing in my streaming PC is brand new. Every single part
was bought used and given a second life, and the whole thing cost less than $1,000.
Would I love a shiny new PC? Absolutely. Have you seen prices
nowadays, though? ๐
A new graphics card alone costs more than this entire rig.
๐ฅ๏ธ Dell Precision 5820
A retired workstation, reborn as a streaming machine
- Intel Xeon W-2140B (8 cores). An odd pick, since it's the chip Apple used in the
iMac Pro, but it's what was available.
- 64 GB RAM
- MSI GeForce RTX 3080 (blower edition)
- 1.6 TB SSD
- 1.92 TB SSD
Every part bought used. Total cost: under $1,000.
๐ฅ The rest of my setup
Cameras, audio, desk gear and a whole wall of screens
- Cameras: my Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra as a webcam, plus a Creative 2K camera
- Mic: Focusrite Scarlett CM25, courtesy of my Focusrite interface
- Headphones: Audio-Technica
- Keyboard: Keychron K10 HE
- Mouse: Logitech G502 X
- 27" ASUS ROG, 1440p high refresh: for gaming
- 28" ASUS 4K: for reviewing data
- 32" LG, 1440p: for critical systems
Three monitors, each with a job. Yes, they're all necessary. ๐
๐ก Why used?
Workstations and graphics cards get retired by businesses and gamers all the time, often
with years of life left in them.
Buying used keeps good hardware out of landfills and makes a capable streaming setup
affordable. It's the same idea as my homelab: repair, reuse,
and give it a second chance.
